چکیده

A fast trigger system is being designed as a potential upgrade to VERITAS, or as the basis for a future array of imaging atmospheric-Cherenkov telescopes such as AGIS. The scientific goal is a reduction of the energy threshold1by a factor of 2 over the current threshold of VERITAS of around 130 GeV. The trigger is being designed to suppress both accidentals from the night-sky background and cosmic rays. The trigger uses field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) so that it is adaptable to different observing modes and special physics triggers, e.g. pulsars. The trigger consists of three levels: The level 1 (L1.5) trigger operating on each telescope camera samples the discriminated pixels at a rate of 400 MHz and searches for nearest-neighbor coincidences. In L1.5, the received discriminated signals are delay-compensated with an accuracy of 0.078 ns, facilitating a short coincidence time-window between any nearest neighbor of 5 ns. The hit pixels are then sent to a second trigger level (L2) that parameterizes the image shape and transmits this information along with a GPS time stamp to the array-level trigger (L3) at a rate of 10 MHz via a fiber optic link. The FPGA-based event analysis on L3 searches for coincident time-stamps from multiple telescopes and carries out a comparison of the image parameters against a look-up table at a rate of 10 kHz. A test of the single-telescope trigger was carried out in spring 2009 on one VERITAS telescope.

Characteristics of the Multi-Telescope Coincidence Trigger of the HEGRA IACT System

The HEGRA–collaboration is operating a system of imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes to search for sources of TeV–γ–rays. Air showers are observed in stereoscopic mode with several telescopes simultaneously. To trigger the telescope system a versatile two–level trigger scheme has been implemented, which allows a significant reduction of the energy threshold with respect to single telescope...

The Smart Pixel Camera is a new camera for imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes , suited for a next generation of large multi-telescope ground based gamma-ray observatories. The design of the camera foresees all electronics needed to process the images to be located inside the camera body at the focal plane. The camera has a modular design and is scalable in the number of pixels. The camera...

Usa-shepherd-n-abs1-og27-oral Absolute Calibration of Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes

A calibrated laser pulse propagating through the atmosphere produces a flash of Rayleigh scattered light with an intensity that can be calculated very accurately when atmospheric conditions are good. This is used in a technique developed for the absolute calibration of ultra high energy cosmic ray fluorescence telescopes, and it can also be applied to imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes (I...

Measurement of the Cherenkov light spectrum and of the polarization with the HEGRA-IACT-system

The HEGRA system of Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes (IACTs) detects Cherenkov light produced by air showers. The concept of stereoscopic observation with the five HEGRA telescopes allows the reconstruction of various shower parameters, for example the shower direction, the location of the shower core and the energy of cosmic rays. One of the telescopes was modified so that measurements...

The Cosmic Ray Background as a Tool for Relative Cali- bration of Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes

Ground based Cherenkov γ-ray telescopes are sensitive to unpredictable changes in the atmospheric transparency which are difficult to measure and interpret in the absence of a calibrated beam of high energy γ-rays. We use the detector response to Cherenkov emission from cosmic ray initiated air showers to obtain a relative calibration for data obtained under different instrumental and atmospher...
